It was recorded at Jobim's place with Sakamoto on piano. (*Not that there's at all anything wrong with Ozu's original films' scores.) I hope it's something Sakamoto still pursues if he can, even if it's just solo-even if it's just "Tokyo Story". Too late, of course, for that collaboration, but can you imagine how amazing that would have been?* Not too long ago I read an interview where he talked about his dream of re-scoring all the Yasujiro Ozu films, possibly in collaboration with Takemitsu. I hope he turns out okay-he is SUCH a cool guy. No one should have to endure such a hardship even once, never mind twice.
Yes, RUYICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA from a couple of years ago is a brilliant documentary, and - like you - it re-ignited my interest in his work.
I’ll have to check out Harry to hospital again. Ran out and bought the CD right around then. This year is devestating enough without news like this. Very sad to read this, huge fan of his music. This is awful news and I hope he recovers. I remember THE REVENANT being very effective in the film as well. Not an expert on his non-film work, but am very fond of his scores for THE LAST EMPEROR, WILD PALMS, THE SHELTERING SKY, and FEMME FATALE. And I still play "Harry to Hospital" on a semi-regular basis. I saw WILD PALMS in first run on ABC ran out and bought the CD. It's the second time he's battling cancer. I was a big fan of him as a musician anyway and my admiration increased after seeing a documentary on NHK about his part in rescuing and restoring a piano that was damaged in the earthquake a decade ago as a spiritual reminder. The course of the music follows a non-teleological drift, in which Sakamoto and Toop seem less concerned with establishing an overarching structure than in allowing each moment the space it needs to develop and breathe.

We are led through a series of discrete moments, each uniquely shaded, whether by highly amplified small percussive sounds, austere electronic tones, or the mournful tones of Toop’s bass recorder. The spatial metaphor this suggests is apt, as listeners can imagine themselves wandering through a subtly changing environment, chancing on beautiful details and admiring them before moving on. The album’s title takes inspiration from the aesthetics of Japanese gardening.

From the opening moments, in which Sakamoto’s delicate inside-piano work is paired with distant scrapes and moans from Toop’s prepared lap steel guitar, it became immediately clear that a subtle, at times hushed, form of free improvisation is being practiced here, one in which space, pause, and silence often take on heightened importance. With their collective musical experience encompassing collaborative work with figures as diverse as Evan Parker, Alva Noto, Arto Lindsay, and Christian Fennesz, in contexts ranging from pop session work to film scores to sound installation, no one could be sure how Sakamoto and Toop would approach their first concert together as a duo.
